Understanding the Divisions

Since the purpose of this group is to provide exposure to competition in the hopes of funneling officers to public matches and USPSA and “USPSA-style” matches are the most prevalent in our area, we have aligned our divisions with USPSA’s divisions. We have made some minor changes to our divisions to not exclude common competitor equipment.

The divisions are:

  • Open: Open division is a division where almost anything goes. Optics are permitted. Porting, compensators, magazine wells, extended controls, “race” holsters, and any action type are permitted. Magazines are limited to 171.25 mm (we allow any 9mm magazine that holds 27 rounds or fewer regardless of length). Major and minor power factor are both permitted (see our page on power factor).

Common firearms we would expect to see at our matches in this division are striker fired guns with compensators, guns like the Staccato XC, and guns with inline barrel porting. At public matches you will commonly see true “race guns.”

  • Limited: Limited is an iron sights only division. Porting and compensators are prohibited, but magazine wells, extended controls, “race” holsters, and all action types are still permitted. Limited division has a 141.25 mm magazine limit for double stack firearms (we allow any 9mm magazine that holds 24 rounds or fewer regardless of length) and 171.25 mm for single stack firearms. Major and minor power factor are both permitted (see our page on power factor).

Common firearms we would expect to see at our matches in this division are higher capacity striker fired guns like the Glock 17 or M&P full-size. At public matches, this division is dominated by 2011s with iron sights.

  • Production: This is another iron sights only division that was originally created to allow people to compete with common commercially available guns like Glock, Sig Sauer, Smith and Wesson, and Beretta pistols. This division is limited to 15 round magazines (you are free to load higher capacity magazines to 15 rounds) and does not allow single action firearms (no 1911/2011 type pistols), magazine wells, or significantly extended controls. All pistols are scored using minor power factor, so there is no potential advantage to shooting a larger caliber.

Common firearms we would expect to see at our matches in this division are guns like the Glock 19, Beretta 92, Glock 43X, Sig P365, and other compact pistols. Note that it may make more sense to register under Limited division and shoot these guns with larger magazines.

  • Single Stack: Under USPSA rules, Single Stack division is limited to traditional style 1911 pistols with a bushing barrel. We will allow you to shoot any single stack pistol in this division provided that the capacity is 8 rounds or less for major and 10 rounds or less for minor power factor. Single Stack is an iron sights only division, but allows magazine wells, extended controls, and “race” holsters.

Because of how tightly restricted this division is in USPSA, it is populated solely by 1911s with bushing barrels and traditional features. We hope that our looser restrictions will bring out a P210, P220, P7M8, or other oddball single stack gun.

  • Carry Optics: This division can best be thought of as “Production with optics” (in IPSC matches, it is called Production Optics). Carry Optics requires a slide mounted optic, prohibits compenators and porting, single action only (no 1911/2011 type pistols), magazine wells, and “race” holsters. Carry Optics does, however, permit magazines up to 141.25 mm (we will permit any 9mm magazine of 24 rounds or less regardless of length). Carry Optics is currently the most popular division in USPSA.

If you have a Glock, Sig P320, or Smith and Wesson M&P duty gun with an optic, this is probably the division for you. Other popular guns for this division would include the CZ Shadow 2, Walther PDP, CZ P10, and Canik pistols.

  • Limited Optics: This division is exactly what it sounds like – Limited with optics. Take all of the criteria for Limited, add a slide mounted optic and remove major power factor and you have Limited Optics. Magazine wells, single action, and “race” holsters are legal in this division. Magazines are limited to 141.25 mm, but as with other divisions, we will permit any 9mm magazine with a capacity of 24 rounds or less, regardless of length.

This is the division for the 2011. If you have a Staccato with an optic, this is probably the division for you. If you have a magazine well on your Glock or Walther, this is probably the division for you.

  • What about Limited 10, Revolver, and PCC?: While USPSA does have those divisions, we do not believe that there will be enough interest to devote any time to them right now. We’re open to feedback, though.

Not sure what division to register? Choose “Open” at the registration page and we will help you when you check in at the match. Even if you get it wrong, we’ll check your gear out when you arrive and get you moved to the appropriate division.
